Our Church History
The year was 1858… Acworth was little more than a watering stop for the Western & Atlantic Railroad. The town would not be incorporated until 1860, when the winds of war were rising across the South. The church was founded when the famed evangelist of the Restoration Movement Dr. Daniel Hook, along with Evangelist Nathan W. Smith organized the Mount Zion Church of Christ on Mitchell Hill in Acworth.

The church building did not survive the Civil War. It was dismantled by invading Union soldiers, was rebuilt on its present site in 1875, was destroyed again by a tragic fire in 1899 but was rebuilt two years later and opened its doors for worship once again. In the decades that followed, the church slowly fell into disrepair and lack of funds could not fix the leaking roof, crumbling foundation, broken windows, and the growing list of much-needed renovations.

The Save Acworth History Foundation stepped forward in 2020 and allocated emergency funding to save the building. Part of the church property was sold to raise funds, and along with local businesses and private fundraising, the church restoration was completed in 2021.

Today, Acworth Christian Church is a non-denominational Christian fellowship of believers who share the same values and passion for reaching our community with the love of Jesus Christ, as those who laid the original foundations of the building more than a century ago. Day-by-day we continue with the work of building up the household of God in Acworth. We invite you to join us as we serve the local community by declaring to them the name of Jesus, and the love of the Father, by the Holy Spirit. We are building a church that is made of more than brick and mortar, but is being held together by our love for God and for one another. Our desire is that the local community may know that the Son of God was sent to seek and save the lost. We are committed to teach others the Word of God so that our members may develop an ever-deepening love for Jesus that changes lives by the Spirit of God.
